We seem to have been on this journey in Torbay for a long time, but at last I can finally announce the official launch date of the Warberries Nursing Home intergenerational programme.
Unlike intergenerational visitation models where early years providers visit a care home for a short period of time on a weekly basis, Warberries Nursing Home has created a designated space on site that enables a group of Childminders to work from the home on a daily basis.
This is an important and exciting development of intergenerational co-located care in the UK because it offers care homes a more accessible and affordable way of developing an intergenerational programme. Rather than considering the building of a nursery on their site, care homes can simply create a space/room within their facility and offer this to local childminders to work from; this is the model that Warberries care home has developed in partnership with the Torbay Early Years Team.
In essence this means that the residents now engage with children on a daily basis and opportunities are created throughout the day that enable both ages to learn together and benefit from being in each other’s company.
The official launch is November 19th 2019 at 1pm when the care home will be open for those who would like to see for themselves how this model works. Hopefully this will be the first of many.
